What is a Shared Ground Loop?
A shared ground loop refers to a heating network where multiple properties, each equipped with an individual ground source heat pump, are connected to a communal ground loop. This ground loop circulates heat from the earth via a series of vertical boreholes (typically around 200m deep) and distributes that energy to each heat pump. In cooling mode, it is the same principle - but in reverse.
Unlike the traditional arrangement whereby each house has its own separate ground loop and borehole, this system allows for several ground source heat pumps to be linked to a single ground loop array. Consequently, neighbouring properties can all benefit from the lower cost and higher efficiency of a shared ground loop array.

This network connected various ground source heat pumps to supply heating and hot water for a newly constructed retirement home in Orpington, comprising 50 individual residences. Rendesco continues to own and manage this network, showcasing our dedication to our customers.
Since this initial project, we have established Rendesco as the most experienced company in the UK when it comes to shared ground loop networks. With over 3,000 homes already benefiting from our geothermal heat networks, we are rapidly expanding our footprint. Through our strategic partnership with Last Mile, we are spearheading the funding and construction of shared ground loop networks across the nation.
