Northstowe Unity Centre, Cambridgeshire

Northstowe's first ground source heat pump, designed and installed for Kier at the new town's community centre.
The Unity Centre is the community building at the heart of Northstowe, the new town north-west of Cambridge. Kier built it for South Cambridgeshire District Council, and it opened in March 2026 with a main hall, café, offices, meeting rooms and a micro library, run by Northstowe Town Council.
Working for Kier, we designed and installed the ground source heat pump system that heats the building: the first ground source heat pump in Northstowe. Seven boreholes beneath the centre's enclosed garden draw steady heat from the ground. We delivered the design, drilling, installation and commissioning as one package, so Kier had a single specialist responsible from the ground loop to the plant room.
Kier is one of the main contractors we work with most on schools and public buildings.
