No heat is an emergency. We treat it like one.

An emergency is no heating, no hot water, or a leak you can't contain. Call 01242 698410 any time, day or night, and you speak to someone who can fix things.

✓Three checks first, if you can. Is the heat pump's switch on (it looks like a normal fused switch by the cupboard)? Is heating actually scheduled on? Is there an error code on the controller? The full checklist.
✓Is it just your home? If your neighbours have lost heating too, it's probably a fault on the network rather than in your home. Tell us anyway, in case nobody else has.
✓Then call. We talk it through with you, and if it needs a visit we book the engineer there and then.
✓Power cut? Call 105. Your heat pump restarts itself when the power comes back, and the cylinder keeps hot water warm for hours.

Register, in five simple steps

Your heating is already installed, already tested and already looked after. These are the next steps to make sure your account is set up.

Register your account

Online, with your address, completion date and email. Your account opens on completion day, so you never pay for anyone else's time, and your tariff is there as soon as you're in. Register.

Set up how you pay

Direct Debit is simplest: the same amount each month, nothing to remember. Or pay by card each month from your account.

Your settings are already set

We set your heating and hot water to the best settings for your home when it was commissioned, so there's nothing you need to change. If you'd like to adjust anything, you can, on the touchscreen controller. Heat pumps work best kept steady, so small nudges rather than big swings.

Know what you pay

One fixed monthly standing charge from us for the network and the care of your heat pump, and electricity from the supplier you choose. The breakdown is below.

Save the number

Your welcome letter

It arrives around completion day: your account number, your tariff and what it covers, how to register, how to pay and who to call. Everything on this page refers back to it. If it hasn't arrived, or it's gone missing, call us and we'll send another.

Two things keep you warm. Here's who looks after each.

The network under the street brings the ground's warmth to your door. The heat pump in your home turns it into heating and hot water. The network is ours. The heat pump is yours, and we look after it as part of your tariff.

The network

Boreholes drilled under the road and open space, and the shared pipes that carry the ground's steady warmth to every home.

Who owns it
Rendesco. We designed it, drilled it and built it.
Who looks after it
Rendesco. We monitor, maintain and repair it for decades, and replace it when the time comes.
What you pay
Your monthly standing charge, which is your tariff. Nothing else, ever, for the network.
Who to call
Rendesco, 01242 698410, any time. The people who answer run the network.

In your home

A ground source heat pump for heating, hot water and, in some homes, cooling; a hot water cylinder; and a touchscreen controller. Some homes also have battery storage, solar panels or fan convectors that heat and cool.

Who owns it
You do. It came with the home, installed and commissioned by us.
Who looks after it
Rendesco, under Rendesco Care, which is included in your tariff: monitoring, servicing, repairs and the 24-hour line. How it works.
What you pay
Nothing extra for the care of the heat pump: it's inside your standing charge. The electricity it uses goes through your normal meter, to the supplier you choose.
Who to call
Rendesco, 01242 698410. Nobody else should work on the heat pump or the controller.

Yours to look after

Radiators, underfloor heating and the valves on them; your temperature and hot water settings on the controller; taps, showers and your home's plumbing and wiring; your electricity supply; and keeping the cupboard clear so an engineer can get in.

Yours to choose

Your electricity supplier and tariff. The heat pump runs on electricity, so a smart or off-peak tariff can bring down what it costs to run.

Worth knowing

Radiators feel warm rather than hot, and the heat pump runs for longer at a lower level than a boiler did. Both are normal, and both are why it costs less to run. Don't use portable gas or paraffin heaters indoors, and don't let anyone but us work on the heat pump.

Two bills, for two different things

Your electricity supplier bills you for the electricity the heat pump uses, and you choose that supplier. Rendesco bills you one monthly charge for the network. Here's what each covers.

✓The Rendesco standing charge. A fixed, non-variable amount each month: the same whatever the weather and however much heating and hot water you use. It pays for the network under the street (running it, repairing it, replacing it when the time comes), Rendesco Care for your heat pump, servicing, the warranty and the 24-hour line. There's no heat meter and no usage element.
✓Your electricity. The heat pump runs on electricity through your normal meter, like any other appliance. Any supplier, any tariff. The Ofgem price cap applies to this bill, not to the network charge.
✓Your tariff. The figure for your home, what it covers and your statements are in your account. We don't print tariffs on this page because yours is specific to your home.

How to pay

✓Direct Debit from your account or by phone: the same amount each month, nothing to remember.
✓Card from your account or over the phone, if you'd rather pay as you go.
✓Statements monthly in your account or by email; paper copies on request at no charge.
✓Struggling to pay? Call before it becomes a worry. A payment plan costs nothing to set up, and we never switch off heating or hot water for a registered vulnerable customer in winter.

Electricity is yours to choose

Any supplier, any tariff. You can't switch the network (there's only one under your street), which is why network charges are regulated and published.

Looked after, as part of your tariff

Rendesco Care is our service plan for the heat pump in your home. On a Rendesco network it's included in your tariff, so there's nothing to buy and nothing to renew. The full details are on the Rendesco Care page.

We watch your system. Faults picked up as they start, often fixed before you notice.

A real engineer, any hour. Within 12 hours for an emergency, 6 if you're on our Priority Services Register.

Servicing and the warranty. Service visits booked with you, about an hour each, and an 8-year parts and labour warranty on the heat pump.

Rendesco Care, in full

What's included, what happens at a service, response times, what isn't covered and the member rates for anything outside the plan: all on the Rendesco Care page.

On a Rendesco network you're covered from the day you register. There's nothing to sign up to.

If you need a bit more from us, say so once

Our Priority Services Register is for anyone who would be at higher risk without heating or hot water, or who needs us to communicate differently. It's free, it's confidential, and it changes how fast we come and how we talk to you.

✓Faster response. An engineer within 6 hours if you lose heating or hot water.
✓A nominated contact. A relative, carer or friend who can speak to us and get copies of your bills.
✓Your way of communicating. Large print, braille, audio or a phone call instead of email, and a password so you know an engineer at the door is ours.
✓A check-in during a long outage or a cold snap if you'd like one.

Who it's for: anyone older, living with a long-term illness or disability, with a baby or young children at home, or going through a hard patch. If you're not sure, ask. We'd rather have you on the list.

What protects you

You can't choose a different network, so the rules are strict about how we treat you. Here's what applies, and what to do if we fall short.

Regulated and signed up

Heat networks are regulated by Ofgem. Rendesco is an authorised operator and a member of the Heat Trust, the independent consumer scheme for heat networks: published charges, guaranteed standards with compensation if we miss them, rules on how we treat vulnerable customers, and an independent complaints route.

If something goes wrong

Tell us: from your account, by email or on 01242 698410. We acknowledge within 2 working days and aim to resolve within 10.
Not resolved, or 8 weeks have passed? You can take it to the Energy Ombudsman, free and independent, and we're bound by its decision.
Our full complaints procedure, and what to expect at each step, is published here.

What never happens

✓No disconnection of heating or hot water for a registered vulnerable customer in winter.
✓No bill for more than 12 months after the fact.
✓No engineer at your door without ID, or without your password if you've set one.
✓No sharing of your data beyond what's needed to run your account and your system. Privacy policy.

Straight answers, sorted by what you're doing

Type a word or pick a topic. Anything about your own home, tariff or account is in your account rather than here.

Getting started

Do I need to register, and who with?

Yes, with Rendesco: we run the network and we bill you for it. Register online with your address, completion date and email. Your account opens on completion day, so you never pay for a previous occupant's time, and your tariff is there as soon as you're in.

I never registered but a bill has arrived.

That's fine. Register when you can and we tidy the dates up. We only bill from the day you became responsible for the home, and never for more than 12 months after the fact.

Can I see my tariff and my charges online?

Yes. Log in to your account for your tariff, what it covers, your statements and your payment history. Your tariff is specific to your home, which is why it lives there rather than on this page.

Do I need a boiler service or a gas safety certificate?

No, and no. There's no boiler and no gas in your heating. Your heat pump's servicing is part of Rendesco Care, and we book it with you.

I'm renting. Does anything change?

The heating works the same. Depending on your tenancy, the network charge is either in your rent or paid by you directly: your agreement says which, and we can confirm it on the phone. The account can be in the landlord's name or the tenant's.

Where's my heat pump and what's in the cupboard?

Usually the airing cupboard or a utility cupboard: a unit a bit smaller than a fridge freezer, the hot water cylinder and the controller. The only things you ever need to touch are the touchscreen controller and the fused switch.

Who do I call about radiators, taps or showers?

Radiators, underfloor heating, taps and showers are part of your home's plumbing rather than the heat pump, so a plumber of your choice can work on them. If you're not sure whether something is the heat pump's doing, open a support ticket first and we'll tell you.

Heating, hot water and cooling

What temperature should I set?

Your home was set to the best settings when it was commissioned, so you shouldn't need to change anything. Most homes are comfortable between 19 and 21°C; if you'd like it different, adjust it on the touchscreen controller, then leave it.

My home takes ages to warm up, and the radiators feel cooler than my old boiler's.

Both are normal. Heat pumps warm a home gently and steadily at lower water temperatures, which is how they cost less to run. Set a comfortable temperature and leave it on rather than turning it up high and off again. If a room never gets comfortable, open a support ticket.

The heat pump runs for longer than my old boiler did. Is that right?

Yes. A boiler blasts and stops; a heat pump runs for longer at a lower level. Longer running is not higher cost.

Steady or scheduled heating: which is better?

Steady, with a small drop overnight if you like. Heat pumps are most efficient keeping a home at a constant temperature. Use the schedule for hot water rather than for heating.

Hot water takes a while to reach the tap.

Run the tap for 30 to 45 seconds. In some homes the pipe run from the cylinder is long. If it never gets hot, check the hot water schedule on your controller, then open a support ticket.

No hot water after a big bath?

The cylinder is probably reheating. Press “boost” on the controller and give it 30 minutes. If it happens often, your hot water schedule may need a second slot: we can set that with you.

What's the weekly high-temperature cycle?

Once a week the system heats the stored water to around 60°C to keep it clean (a legionella protection cycle). It's automatic, it's normal, and you'll just notice the water is hotter than usual for a while.

Does it work in very cold weather?

Yes. The warmth comes from the ground under the street, which stays at around 10°C all year whatever the weather is doing above. Keep it running steadily through cold snaps rather than switching off.

Can my home be cooled in summer?

If your home has fan convectors instead of radiators, cooling is built in: set it like heating. Ordinary radiators can't cool. Ask us if you're not sure what your home has, or if you'd like cooling added.

Is the heat pump noisy?

A ground source heat pump in a cupboard runs at under 45 dB, about a dishwasher two rooms away, and there's no outdoor unit. If it has started making a new noise, tell us: that's a fault, not a feature.

There's an error code on the controller.

Note it down and check your controller guide: most codes come with a plain-English explanation and the fix. If it's still showing, open a support ticket and include the code; it saves time.

There's a power cut.

Call 105 (the national power cut line). Your heat pump restarts itself when the power comes back, and the cylinder keeps hot water warm for several hours. If it hasn't restarted an hour after the power returns, open a support ticket.

Should I turn the heating off when I go away?

Turn it down rather than off: 15 to 16°C keeps the home dry and protects pipes, and it costs less than heating a cold house back up. If your controller has a holiday setting, use that.

Can I bleed radiators or top up pressure myself?

Bleeding a radiator is fine. If the controller shows a pressure warning, contact us rather than topping up: the heat pump side is a sealed system and we'd rather check why it dropped.

Is there anything I should never do?

Don't use portable gas or paraffin heaters indoors, don't block the cupboard or the vents, and don't let anyone other than us work on the heat pump or the controller. All of those void warranties and some are dangerous.

Bills and payments

What do I pay, exactly?

Two things. Your electricity supplier bills you for the electricity the heat pump uses, through your normal meter. Rendesco bills you one fixed monthly standing charge for the network, and that charge also covers Rendesco Care, servicing, the warranty and the 24-hour line. It's the same every month: no variable or usage element, and no heat meter. The figures for your home are in your account.

Why do I get two bills?

Because two different things are being supplied. Your electricity supplier sells you electricity, and you can choose any supplier you like. The network charge pays for the shared network that gives your heat pump its warmth, and there's only one network under your street.

How do I pay?

Direct Debit from your account is simplest, or pay by card each month from your account or over the phone. Statements are in your account; paper copies are available on request at no charge.

Do you take meter readings?

No. There's no heat meter: your charge is fixed, and the heat pump's electricity goes through your electricity meter like any other appliance.

Why is my charge different from my neighbour's?

Where charges differ between homes on the same network it's by home type, and the tariff sets it out. Your electricity use is your own either way, and that moves with occupancy, temperature settings and hot water habits.

Will my charges change?

Charges can change no more than once every six months, and you get at least 31 days' written notice of any change, with the reason.

I think my bill is wrong.

Tell us from your account or by email and we check it. If there's a dispute we won't chase the disputed amount while we look into it.

I'm struggling to pay. What are my options?

Call us before it becomes a worry. A payment plan costs nothing to set up, and if your circumstances have changed we'll talk about the Priority Services Register. Independent, free advice: Citizens Advice, StepChange and National Energy Action.

Can I be back-billed?

Never for more than 12 months after the fact, and never for a previous occupant. If we've made a mistake we'll say so and agree a sensible way to settle it.

Can I switch to a different heat supplier?

No. The network under your street is a shared utility with one operator, which is why heat networks are regulated by Ofgem and why the charges are published. You can choose any electricity supplier.

Does the Ofgem price cap apply to me?

It applies to your electricity, not to the network charge. For a fair comparison of what your heating costs against gas or an air source heat pump, the Heat Trust's cost calculator is independent.

Is VAT included in the prices shown?

Yes. Domestic heating is charged at 5% VAT and every price we show includes it.

Servicing, warranty and Rendesco Care

What is Rendesco Care, and am I on it?

Our service plan for the heat pump in your home: monitoring, a 24-hour line with fast engineer response, servicing, and member rates on anything outside the plan. On a Rendesco network it's included in your tariff, so you're on it from the day you register. The full plan is on the Rendesco Care page.

What warranty does my heat pump have?

An 8-year parts and labour warranty from the day your home was commissioned, with 2 years on the other equipment we fitted. The terms are in your handover pack and your account, and the warranty stays with the home if you sell.

Do I have to be in for a service?

Yes. We confirm the time with you by phone or email, visits take about an hour, and the report goes into your account.

What happens during a service?

Filters cleaned, refrigerant and electrical connections checked, pressures and flow rates checked, and the controller settings reviewed for your home. If something's wearing, we tell you before it fails.

Can I use my own engineer?

Please don't, on the heat pump or the controller: the warranty and Rendesco Care depend on our engineers doing the work, and we know the system. Radiators, taps and the rest of your plumbing are yours to have worked on by whoever you like.

What access do you need?

The cupboard with the heat pump, and occasionally the chamber in the street. We always arrange a time in advance, our engineers carry ID, and you can set a password with us so you know it's really us.

Moving home

I'm moving out. What do I do?

Tell us your completion date and a forwarding address, from your account or on the phone. We close your account to the day and send a final statement. The warranty, the service history and the cover stay with the home.

I've just bought a home on a Rendesco network from a previous owner.

Welcome. Register with your completion date; the warranty and the service history transfer to you automatically. Nothing from the previous owner's account carries over.

I'm a landlord. How does it work?

Tell us the tenancy dates and who pays. The account can be in your name or the tenant's, and we bill whoever you tell us to.

I'm thinking of buying a home on a Rendesco network. What should I know?

That the heating is the easy part: no boiler to replace, one published monthly charge with the warranty and servicing inside it, and a company that answers the phone 24 hours a day. The Geo Flow pages explain the whole thing, and this page shows what living with it is like.

Extra help and your rights

What is the Priority Services Register, and who can join?

A free register for anyone who would be at higher risk without heating or hot water, or who needs us to communicate differently: older people, anyone with a long-term illness or disability, families with a baby, or anyone going through a hard patch. Tell us from your account or on the phone and we add you straight away.

What extra support do you offer?

A 6-hour engineer response if you lose heating or hot water, a nominated contact who can deal with us for you, bills and letters in large print, braille or audio, a password for engineers, and a check-in during long outages or cold snaps.

How do I make a complaint?

Tell us from your account, by email or on 01242 698410. We acknowledge within 2 working days and aim to resolve within 10 working days. If you're not happy with our answer, or 8 weeks have passed, you can go to the Energy Ombudsman, which is free and independent, and we're bound by its decision.

How am I protected as a heat network customer?

Heat networks are regulated by Ofgem, and Rendesco is an authorised operator and a Heat Trust member. That means published charges, guaranteed standards of service with compensation if we miss them, rules on how we treat vulnerable customers, and an independent complaints route.

What happens if Rendesco stopped operating the network?

The network keeps running. Ofgem regulation requires continuity arrangements for every operator, and ours include a separate network company, long-term funding and step-in rights so another operator could take over without your heating stopping.

How do you use my data?

Your heat pump sends us running data (temperatures, pressures, efficiency, error codes) so we can see faults early. Your account data is used to run your account. We don't sell it or share it beyond what's needed, and our privacy policy sets out the detail.

How it works

What is a heat network?

A shared system that brings low-carbon warmth to a group of homes. Buried pipes connect each home to the source: on a Geo Flow network, boreholes that draw steady warmth from the ground. Inside your home a heat pump turns that into heating and hot water. The energy is shared; your home is controlled individually.

How is Geo Flow different from district heating?

District heating pumps hot water through insulated pipes from a central plant. Geo Flow moves ground-temperature water through plain pipes, and each home has its own heat pump to make the heat. Nothing is lost on the way, there's no central plant to go wrong, and you control your own comfort.

Can the ground run out of heat?

No. The boreholes are sized to the whole development's demand with headroom, and the ground recharges naturally through the year. Where cooling is fitted it puts warmth back in summer, which helps the balance.

Is my heating low carbon?

Yes. A heat pump gives three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity, and runs on electricity that gets cleaner every year. Compared with a gas boiler that's typically 70 to 80% less carbon.

Nothing matches that. Try a different word, or open a support ticket.
